West Virginia University Research Corporation

Purpose

 “The West Virginia Legislature determined that the future of economic development in the state will depend in part upon research developed at the state institutions of higher education, and enhanced research opportunities for state institution of higher education will promote the general economic welfare of the citizens of the state. The West Virginia University Research Corporation (WVURC) was therefore created as a not-for-profit corporation in 1987 to foster and support research at West Virginia University, and to provide evaluation, development, patenting, management, and marketing services for inventions of the faculty, staff and students of the University. The corporation also serves as the fiscal agent for sponsored programs on behalf of the university”.

Function

“The WVU Research Corporation receives and administers funds awarded by external agencies for research and other activities. The corporation is also responsible for managing intellectual properties sponsored for the university. The primary responsibilities in the intellectual property arena involve the protection of intellectual property by patents, copyrights and commercialization, e.g. licensing, start up companies”.

Coverage

Insurance coverage for the WVU Research Corporation is provided by the  West Virginia Board of Risk and Insurance Management (BRIM). There are differences between WVU Research Corporation BRIM Policies and WVU BRIM Policies.  Questions should be directed to the Risk Manager.
